Course Description

Part 1

This is the first of two modules examining the disease Diabetes Mellitus and many of the policy issues surrounding it. In this module you will be introduced to the nature and pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus.

You will examine in critical detail some of the standards within the NSF for diabetes, the context of assessment, treatment and management of the disease in adults, children and adolescents, as well as the implementation of these standards within the community and hospital settings, and the evidence base for best practice in diabetes care.ed conclusions from data, Descriptive Statistics is utilised to describe what the data is presenting.

Part 2

This is the second module on diabetes, which continues to examine in detail the remaining standards within the NSF for Diabetes and their implementation.

By the end of this course the student should be able to propose, justify and critically evaluate educational strategies for clients with diabetes in order to promote their empowerment and self care; demonstrate in-depth evidence-based knowledge of the assessment, treatment and management of people with diabetes during admission to hospital and during pregnancy, utilising new approaches to care management when appropriate; demonstrate in-depth evidence-based knowledge related to the assessment, treatment and management of long-term complications of diabetes mellitus; demonstrate in-depth knowledge of a multiprofessional diabetes service and an understanding of other professionals' roles, identifying the leadership requirements of team care for clients with diabetes; and demonstrate in-depth knowledge of current local and national policy relevant to diabetes, identifying, assessing and resolving problems raised by policy change.

The nature and pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus

An introduction to the National Service Framework for Diabetes

Standards 1 & 2: Prevention of type 2 diabetes and identification of people with diabetes

Standard 4: Clinical care of adults with diabetes mellitus

Standards 5 & 6: Clinical care of children and young people with diabetes mellitus

Standard 7: Management of diabetic emergencies

Part 2

Standard 3: Empowering people with diabetes

Standard 8: Care of people with diabetes during admission to hospital

Standard 9: Diabetes and pregnancy

Standards 10 and 11, part 1: Detection and management of long-term complications - diabetic retinopathy and renal nephropathy

Standards 10 and 11, part 2: Detection and management of long-term complications - Lower limb and cardiovascular complications

Multiprofessional and multiagency management of the diabetes service

Qualifications

On completion of your course, you will receive two qualifications:

Qualification 1: Diabetes Diploma

Diabetes Diploma issued by Stonebridge Associated Colleges, entitling you to use the letters SAC Dip after your name.

Qualification 2: Level 4 Diabetes Award

This Course leads to an NCFE Level 4 Award Certificate for successful learners. That means that it is independantly accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland (in which case GCSE's are at levels 1 and 2 and A Levels are at level 3). In accrediting the programme at level 4, NCFE attests that its learning outcomes are at an equivalent level to a level 4 national qualification.

This award has been designed by Stonebridge Associated Colleges to meet specific learners' or employers' requirements. Accreditation by NCFE is a guarantee of quality. It means that this learning programme has been scrutinised and approved by an independent panel of experienced educational professionals and is quality audited biannually by NCFE.

With this course you will have unlimited access to your own personal tutor who specialises in their field of study. It is your personal tutor's role to ensure that you receive constructive feedback and to deal with any queries you may have. You are more than welcome to telephone, fax or email your personal tutor.

Requirements for Entry

There is no experience or previous qualifications required for enrolment on this course. It is available to all students, of all academic backgrounds.

Study Hours

This is only an approximate figure and is dependant upon how much time you can dedicate to your studies and how well you grasp the learning concepts in the course material. Furthermore, at the end of each lesson there is a question paper that needs to be completed and returned to your tutor. You should allow at least 1 - 2 hours of study to complete each question paper.

The approximate amount of time required to complete the course is: 120 hrs.

After each lesson there will be a question paper, which needs to be completed and submitted to your personal tutor for marking. This method of continual assessment ensures that your personal tutor can consistently monitor your progress and provide you with assistance throughout the duration of the course.

Information available Online access to certain medical and other health related literature and research. You will need to register and provide a user name and password but the service is free so it is worth doing. Once you are registered you can log onto Medscape any time, giving your user name and password, and access a range of good papers related to diabetes.

  • Access to journals

You will need to access electronic journals to complete this module.

Many of the learning activities will require you to read, critique, analyse, evaluate and/or compare certain chapters, articles, research papers or other literature, including web sites and electronic journal articles.

If you are registered at a university, you can access electronic journals through your university library or learning resource centre. Many universities subscribe to the Athens electronic journal service through which you can access an extensive range of electronic journals and databases including Medline and CINAHL.

Even if your university subscribes to Athens, you still need to set up your own individual Athens account with a user name and password.

In addition many NHS Trusts provide access to electronic journals. One such opportunity for those who work in the London area is HILO. Like Athens, this provides electronic access to health related journals.

Nursing Times Net

This service give you free access to an archive of articles from Nursing Times. You need to register with Nursing Times Net (registration is FREE). Go to the following website, www.nursingtimes.net and you will receive simple instructions about how to register. You will need to select a user name and a password so make sure you keep a record of the ones you have selected as, once you have registered, you will need to log on using that user name and password every time you wish to use the service.

  • PDF files

To download pdf files you will need to have an Adobe Acrobat Reader. If your computer does not have Acrobat Reader installed, you will be asked If you want to download it the first time that you try to download a pdf file. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the reader.
