| Drawing on many examples from history, literature and daily life, this course provides the mental and verbal training to enable the student to deal successfully with those demands encountered both socially and in the working environment. Like the practitioner of martial arts, the student will learn to master a mindset by which to respond to various types of verbal attack or exploitation with speed and skill. |

Assignment 1: Self-Protective Strategies: We encompass the invasive question, inappropriate tipping and the exploitative favour request.
Assignment 2: Why and whom we trust: beginning with Shakespeare's image ("the devil hath power to assume a pleasing shape"), we deal with those shapes assumed by such devils in order to obtain money and sometimes to kill. Through examining the types of persons we trust, we discuss those tools needed for self-protection. Topics include: Exploitation by Experts, Coercion by Religionists: ("My will be done"), and deadly ruses: Trust and Death.
Assignment 3: Section 1. Multi-level Marketing, Pyramid Schemes: resenting a case study, we work through the growing degrees of involvement, Gradual brain-washing, Increasing financial and moral debt, and pointers on spotting pyramid schemes. Section 2. Bringing a Personal Injury Claim: Providing the case file of an injured client, this section details the process by which an individual with no legal training can bring a successful claim against a multi-national corporation.
Assignment 4: Social Alchemy: turning the Dross of defeat into gold: when you can't join them, beat them. Here we develop ways of transmuting disappointment into success, both in working and daily living. Topics include Starting One's Own Business, Turning Pain into Profit, and Panning for Goodness.
Assignment 5: Social TaeKwonDist Parenting: Discussing the case of a single dad left with the care of his two young boys, we then move on to dilemmas faced by one or two-parent homes, potential conflicts with au-pairs, and end by suggesting diverse activities for quality family time. |
