A Distance Learning Course of 1 Lesson
Course Description

This Social Care - Skills Course has been structured so that students can choose exactly the area they need to develop by setting their own learning priorities.

These courses can be used by qualified social workers in practice as a source of professional updating, as well as by trainers, lecturers and practice teachers as a source of learning material. They can also be used by individuals who are eager to learn more about a particular area of Social Work.

We all have some idea of what "protection" means. It may be that the immediate image that comes to mind is of a vulnerable person, a child perhaps, who is in some kind of danger of harm or injury.

The term carries with it a sense that the protector has the right, responsibility or power to protect and that the individual is in need of this protection. The concept of protection is therefore bound up with the rules by which society operates and through which individuals interact with one another.

This course contains many valuable insights into prevention and protection from harm and danger and does so from the perspective of many helping professionals.

By the end of this unit you will be able to:

  • Describe the main features of protection and its place in contemporary social work
  • Analyse the ethical tensions involved in social work's dual role of care and control
  • Place the role of social work in protecting people in the contexts of other professional roles and the wider expectations of society
  • Identify protection needs when working with children and young people and relate these to social work practice
  • Identify vulnerability in adults and design a practice framework for protection
  • Describe how social work can be protective in situations of domestic violence and apply your knowledge to practice.
