Studying your GCSE

GCSE English Literature will develop your analytical, critical thinking and communication skills through the study of plays, novels and poetry.

You’ll explore literally across a 400-year time period focusing on the fascinating work of Shakespeare as well as 19th Century novels and 21st Century poetry.

Aside from an introduction to classic texts and authors, you’ll enhance your reading comprehension and writing skills that will serve you throughout your personal and professional life.

Included in this course bundle are the AQA exams you’ll need to get qualified. The exams will consist of two written exams analysing Shakespeare, a 19th-century novel, poetry and modern texts.

Exams will take place at an official exam centre in May/June. Exam bookings will be made each January for the following May/June by one of our higher education team. Exam location will depend on which centres are open. The team member arranging the exam for each student will always recommend the centre closest to the address of the learner.

Through the exam, you will need to demonstrate a critical understanding of how to analyse various texts and writing styles.

A grade 4 (formerly C) or above in GCSE English Literature is an essential qualification for further education. It can also be a requirement for some degree level studies and employment opportunities such as teaching.

Therefore, if you didn’t achieve the grade you wanted, you haven’t sat the GCSE at all, our online course can help.

Getting Started

Studying your GCSE with Stonebridge Associated Colleges isn’t like traditional courses. We are an online-based institute, so all your learning materials and assignments are online. No classes, no timetables and no waiting for books in the post.

This allows you to study your GCSE in a manner that suits you. The only specific deadline to work towards is your exam – exam sittings are held once per year in May or June.

That means you can balance your studies and your existing commitments. Rather than being forced to choose one over the other.

Once you are enrolled, you can start learning straight away. You will have a personal login that will give you instant access to the student portal.

You will also be assigned a tutor to help you throughout your English Literature GCSE. They will mark your assignments, provide guidance and give feedback. They are available too if you get stuck or you have a personal challenge that could impact your studies.

Pursuing your career

A GCSE in English Literature allows you to go on to complete either an A-level, an RQF or an Access to HE Diploma. All of these are key qualifications to equip you to go on to study English or a social science at degree level.

As you progress through your course, you will study the following modules:

  • Introduction to English Literature
  • Modern texts - Pigeon English
  • Poetry
  • Unseen Poetry
  • The Nineteenth-Century Novel - Jekyll & Hyde
  • Macbeth
  • Exam preparation

At the end of each unit there is an assignment to complete. Once this has been completed and submitted to your tutor he or she will respond with your grade as well as detailed feedback. Following successful completion of each unit you’ll be exam ready!

All instalment plans must be paid and up to date before an exam can be booked. In addition, exams cannot be booked for dates before the final payment is successfully made. For example, if two monthly payments are due in the future, an exam can be booked, but the exam date will be after the final payment is received.
