You’ll learn how life came to be in the sea and how it has changed over billions of years. Exploring the ways aquatic animals have evolved to live in harsh environments like an arctic sea or a deep abyss.

By studying this course, you will develop your understanding of the core components of life in the ocean. Allowing you to confidently seek employment within the marine sector.

Your understanding of the impact of human activity and climate change could lead you into conservation, environmental management and policy related roles. Alternatively, you could work in labs analysing species, or in the field carrying out research and collating findings.

  • Understand how ocean topography varies from the shoreline and continental shelf to the ocean basin, abyssal plain and trenches
  • Understand the ocean as a habitat
  • Understand the chemistry and properties of seawater, including how light and sound are transmitted
  • Understand how waves are formed
  • Understand how the major currents move around ocean basins

Unit 2: Coral Reefs

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the tropical seas and how coral reefs are formed and distributed around the world
  • Understand how coral animals live and how they evolved to form complex ecosystems
  • Understand the symbiosis between coral animals and plants that enable each to live and support the diversity of other species in an otherwise barren part of the ocean

Unit 3: Mangroves and Seagrass Beds

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the fringes of tropical seas where they form a unique habitat for marine animals
  • Understand the importance of mangroves as nursery areas for fish such as lemon sharks
  • Understand how mangroves form a buffer between the land and the open ocean
  • Understand the many species that live in mangroves permanently
  • Understand the importance of mangroves as a food source for residents and visitors alike

Unit 4: The Polar Regions

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the polar seas and the important differences between the Arctic and Antarctic regions
  • Understand the adaptations to the animals that live in such extreme environments
  • Understand how these animals can live in sub-zero temperatures
  • Understand marine animals of the polar regions like polar bears in the Arctic and penguins in the Antarctic

Unit 5: Shores and Estuaries

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand shores and estuaries
  • Understand the smaller number of species that appear in this group

Unit 6: The Deep Sea

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the strange animals that are adapted to living in the deep sea
  • Understand how these animals cope with extreme cold, continuous darkness and intense pressure
  • Understand how energy is transferred to the deep ocean and how it supports life in the abyss

As this course is provided through an online distance learning platform, you will complete all work and assessments from home.
