Functional Skills Maths is a nationally recognised alternative to GCSE Maths. Whereas the GCSE course focuses heavily on the theoretical principles, Functional Skills teaches you the practical elements.
This will help you to use maths in everyday settings whether that’s for work or balancing the budget at home.
This online course will teach you the key elements of maths that will be of most use to you. This includes addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You will also learn how to work out distance, weight, temperature and volume. The course will also cover probability and how to read and understand graphs and charts.
This course option also provides you with a specialist tutor who will guide you through your learning. You will receive two one-to-one tutorials focussed on your unique needs and additional learning in areas you find difficult. You will also be given an email address to use to contact your tutor who.
Finally, when you’ve completed your learning you will be provided with a marked mock exam with feedback.
Upon gaining your Functional Skills Level 2 in maths, you'll get a qualification that is the equivalent to a grade C or above at GCSE. This means that you are able to demonstrate your ability to use maths at this level.

When you’re ready for your final exam, Functional Skills maths has just one assessment which covers all of the topics you’ll learn in realistic scenarios. The assessment is available as an online or a paper-based exam. You’ll be responsible for booking your own exam and paying any associated fees, but don’t worry – we’ll give you our handy guide which shows you how to do this and a link to help you to find a provider near you.
At the end of this course, should you decide to take the exam, you’ll have gained a Functional Skills Level 2 qualification in Maths. This is equivalent to a grade C or above (4 or above) at GCSE. It will enable you to go on to further education programmes and can also give you access to some universities.
