Why Study a Business Degree

Business degrees help students to develop the range of transferable skills needed to work well in a business environment. There is a variety of business degrees available, such as business and management studies, human resource management and finance. Each course teaches through a combination of practical work and theory while providing subject-specific knowledge in areas like organisational structure and day-to-day managerial tasks.

Students develop a broad understanding of business organisations and the areas that directly affect their function, such as customers, communication, finance, operations, markets, information technology, business policy and strategy. With topics often explored at both a European and international level.

The many subjects studied help students realise the multidisciplinary nature of business. Students are taught the principles of each through various real-life scenarios and examples. This introducing them to the diversity of workplaces and the elements that can positively or negatively impact them.

Through studying business-related degrees, you are given the skill set to respond to the challenges and developments in business and society. Allowing you to make informed executive decisions that consider economic, ethical and social implications.

With every industry requiring strong leaders, managers, financial advisors and market-savvy decision makers, a business degree will position you at the forefront of many industries.

While there tends to be a traditional path for business graduates to move into careers in the financial and banking sectors, consultancy, human resources and marketing, there are many who pursue careers in creative industries like media, fashion and even the charity sector. Some take a more innovative route and create their own business with the skills they’ve learnt.

Required Qualifications

To study business at university, you would typically be required to have at least two A Levels. The more competitive and popular degrees may even ask for three with A/B grades. The entry requirements can range from CCC to AAB, but often universities will request you have at least BBB.

The degree acceptance is quite flexible in that most business-related courses don’t ask for specific A Level subjects. They do, however, specify that you require five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including maths and English. Some asking for a B in mathematics.

Foundation degrees can lead onto a full business degree, for these, you often only need one A Level or equivalent. So, should you not have enough to apply for the full degree directly, this can provide a good option for you.

Apprenticeships can also be an excellent way to work your way to a business-related career. These allow you to work and earn while you study. They are designed by employers to set out occupational standards for specific job roles. So, while they equip you with the skills and knowledge for that position, they offer much less in terms of flexibility for other roles.

Alternatively, online courses can be a viable and flexible way for you to get the qualifications you need to apply.
