Stonebridge - Should I study Access to HE Diploma (Computer Science)?

Access to Higher Education Diplomas are designed with the sole purpose of helping you study at university. They are profession focussed and provide students with essential industry know-how and skills. Giving you foundational knowledge that can be further explored in a related degree. From which you can access a professional career.

To work in the computer science field is an attractive prospect for several reasons. With a huge skills shortage and demand for technologists, there are many job opportunities available. And with technology becoming an increasing feature of our lives, this area of employment continues to grow.

While there is a huge need for computer scientists, demand is typically greater at experienced-hire level than entry-level. So, to make the most of this prosperous career path, you’ll need the relevant skills.

It is possible to enter the industry through apprenticeships or by proving the skills you’ve independently developed. But in most instances, you’ll need a bachelor or advanced degree in computer science.

If you’re lacking the qualifications needed for university, an Access to Higher Education Diploma (Computer Science) can bridge the gap. Allowing you to take the next step toward your degree.

Read on to see how an Access to HE Diploma (Computer Science) can help make your goal a reality.

Computer Scientists Write Software Programs

You’ll Learn valuable Computer Skills

An Access to Higher Education Diploma (Computer Science) focusses on the key components of the industry. Allowing you to become confident and familiar with the numerous areas of computer science you’ll utilise daily in your career.

From learning how to interrogate databases and create reports, to coding standards, web development tools, methodologies and technologies. You’ll gain an appreciation for the vast level of knowledge and skill required to be a competent Computer Scientist.

Something which can’t be matched through typical complimentary A Levels like Maths or Physics.

In the Access to Higher Education Diploma, the modules include:

  • Using Spreadsheet Software
  • Using the Internet & Email
  • Algebraic Methods
  • Cyber Threats and Legislation
  • Calculus
  • Database Applications
  • Database Development
  • Trigonometry
  • Fundamentals of Hyper Text Preprocessor (PHP)
  • Fundamentals of Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Networking
  • Designing and Developing a Website

You will also plan and carry out a research project on a topic of your choosing. Plus, build a study skills portfolio to demonstrate your abilities to universities and future employers. Helping you to prove your worth once you graduate and land your first professional role in the industry.

You can progress to University

Access to Higher Education Diplomas are designed to provide an alternative route into higher education. They can stand in place of A Levels and other Level 3 qualifications that are typically required for university entry.

Previously you’d have to spend at least two if not three years getting the necessary A Levels to apply. Now, with one Access to HE Diploma accounting for three individual A Levels, that time is massively reduced. While you have two years to complete the course, you’re free to work through it as quickly as you please. Meaning many students can be finished and applying to university within 9-12 months.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma (Computer Science) also teaches you vital university skills. Recognising that students may have been out of formal education for some time, they prepare you for university-level learning. Focussing on your academic reading, writing and study ability so you can hit the ground running as an undergraduate.

When studying a computer science degree, you explore the subjects covered in your Access to HE Diploma in greater detail. It will also encompass new, fascinating topics like machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Advanced degrees are available following completion of your initial degree. In these, you typically choose one aspect of the field in which to focus. You could study a Master of Science in Computer Network Engineering. Or a Master of Science in Database Administration, for example.

These programmes are designed to give students advanced knowledge, hands-on experience and the ability to develop research in their particular field. They also place you in the ‘experienced-hire’ category when applying for professional positions.

So, depending on your interests and if you choose a specialism, you’ll have plenty to pick from. You could combine your love of technology and gaming and focus on computer game development. Or incorporate your passion for space and outer galaxies by working within the IT department of aerospace and defence organisations. As most businesses rely on computers to function, there are opportunities to be explored wherever you look.
