4 Courses That Will Help Women Break Into Male Dominated Industries

Written by Adam
Agriculture and Forestry courses

The working world is evolving, with women featuring more frequently in leadership roles. However, there is still a way to go before gender parity is achieved in pay and representation within specific powerhouse industries.

While educational opportunities in the UK are technically equal, a disparity remains. For decades, sectors like tech and engineering have been male-dominated, often due to ingrained social influences and a historic lack of visible female role models. Because these careers often come with sizeable pay packets, this imbalance significantly contributes to the gender pay gap.

If we want to achieve true equality, we must encourage women to claim their space in these professions. We have identified four key areas that remain male-dominated and the specific courses that provide the foundation to become a leader in them.

1. Engineering

Engineering is the backbone of innovation, yet it remains one of the most starkly imbalanced sectors in the UK.

The reality

As of 2025, women make up just 16.9% of the UK’s engineering and technology workforce.

The opportunity

With a massive skills shortage in the sector, there has never been a better time for women to enter. Research suggests that increasing female participation in engineering could add £150 billion to the UK economy by 2030.

How to break in

If you didn’t take physics or advanced maths at A Level, you don’t have to start from scratch. Our Access to Higher Education Diploma (Engineering) is designed to give you the UCAS points and foundational knowledge needed to enter a university degree in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering.

2. Computing and IT

From AI development to cybersecurity, the digital world is still largely built by men, but the tide is finally turning.

The reality

While women now make up roughly 25% of computing students—the highest on record—men still hold over 70% of professional roles in Information and Communication.

The leadership gap

Only 5% of leadership positions in the UK technology sector are currently held by women.

How to break in

To help bridge this gap, women can start with our Access to Higher Education Diploma (Computing). This accredited online course is the equivalent of 3 A Levels and covers the essential principles of computer science, preparing you for a degree and a career in a high-paying, future-proof industry.

3. Criminology and Justice

While the broader social science field is diverse, the upper echelons of the criminal justice system and specialized criminological research have historically been male-heavy.

The reality

Men still account for the vast majority of those working within high-level tactical and investigative roles. Furthermore, much of historical criminological theory was written by men, about men.

The impact

Diverse perspectives are vital for a fair justice system. Having more women in criminology leads to better insights into victimology and social policy.

How to break in

Our Access to Higher Education Diploma (Criminology) allows you to explore the psychology of crime and the inner workings of the justice system. It’s the perfect stepping stone for those looking to pursue a degree in Law, Criminology, or specialised Police studies.

4. Veterinary Science (specialist roles)

Wait, isn’t the vet world female-dominated now? Not quite where it matters most for equality.

The reality

While roughly 60% of practicing vets are women, a significant leadership gap persists. Men are still twice as likely to be sole principals of a practice and four times as likely to be directors.

The pay gap

Because men still dominate the specialist roles and practice ownership, a gender pay gap remains within the industry.

How to break in

To move from assistant roles into high-level veterinary surgery or practice directorship, you need the right degree. Our Access to Higher Education Diploma (Veterinary Science) provides the science-heavy foundation required to apply for competitive Veterinary Medicine degrees at university.

The next female leaders in male-dominated industries

If you are interested in breaking into the male dominated industries mentioned, then the first step is to understand the industry you want to embark on. Through the courses highlighted, you can enhance your knowledge and work towards the qualifications you need to achieve your career goals.
