English Functional Skills Past Papers: Top 10 for 2026

Written by Fiona

Are you preparing for a Functional Skills English exam and unsure where to start? English Functional Skills past papers are one of the most useful ways to practise, but only when they match your awarding body and level. A City & Guilds paper, for example, might not reflect the format used for your qualification. Start with these UK resources, then use the practical study plan below to turn practice into purposeful revision.

1. City & Guilds

Use City & Guilds only when your centre has entered you for its qualification. Its Functional Skills English materials cover Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2, with question papers, reading source documents, sample assessments and mark schemes for many tasks.

Match the paper to your level and assessment format before you start. After each attempt, mark it against the scheme, note the question types that cost you marks, then schedule a retake in your study plan. Arrange Speaking, Listening and Communicating practice separately, because the written paper will not cover it.

2. NCFE

Sitting your exam with NCFE? Head to its Functional Skills delivery support pages, where you'll find sample and practice assessments covering both paper-based and digital formats. Try one of each so the actual assessment feels familiar.

Some materials sit behind a centre login. If a paper or mark scheme won't open, ask your tutor. NCFE practice papers pay off most when they match your actual exam board, so check your course paperwork before you build a study plan around them.

3. Pearson Edexcel

Choose Pearson Edexcel when you're entered with Edexcel, since its samples, qualification guidance and ExamWizard sets match that board's wording and mark schemes most closely. Use ExamWizard for short drills on one weak skill, then add them to a weekly plan.

Expect limits. Live papers sit in secure centre areas, so you usually can't download them yourself, and some resources aim at tutors. With another board, keep these for extra practice after your own papers.

4. Open Awards

Open Awards splits its sample assessment materials by component, which makes it a strong pick when one skill is holding you back. If this is your exam board, head to the awarding body's Level 2 English qualification page for separate Reading, Writing, and Speaking, Listening and Communicating resources.

The Reading and Writing samples come with mark schemes, so you can mark your own work and see exactly where you're gaining or losing marks. Feed that into your next study session rather than retaking papers at random. Check the materials match your level first, as they differ between Entry Level and Level 2.

Speaking and listening can't be revised from a paper alone. Book time with a tutor or a study group to rehearse it.

5. Ascentis

Sitting an Ascentis exam? Check the Ascentis Level 2 Functional Skills English qualification page, as noted earlier. Its online Preparation Station lets you rehearse inside the actual assessment platform, so the question types and on-screen format feel familiar on exam day.

Access isn't open to everyone. You'll likely need login details from your centre, and there's no public archive of downloadable papers. For Ascentis learners, that's still worth it. Practising in the actual platform beats working through PDFs that look nothing like your real test.

6. Functional Skills

Run out of official papers from your exam board? The Functional Skills site keeps a free collection of English past papers across levels, with materials linked to several awarding bodies. Some include mark schemes, so you can score your own attempts.

Check the awarding body label on each paper before you start. A paper written for a different board still builds reading and writing stamina, but question styles and marking emphasis can differ from your real exam. Use it as extra timed practice inside your study plan, then review where you dropped marks.

7. Pass Functional Skills

Pass Functional Skills (linked earlier in this article) sorts its English resources by awarding body and level, so you can go straight to papers that match your actual exam. Mark schemes, model solutions and video explanations come with some materials, which helps when you want to understand why an answer lost marks rather than just see the right one. Online mock exams and exam booking sit on the site too.

Pick this if you're past the revision stage and want to test yourself under exam conditions. Before you count a result as proof you're ready, confirm the paper is an official release or a provider-created practice paper, and check which parts are free against the paid services.

8. Skills Workshop

Found a weak spot after marking a full paper? Head to Skills Workshop next.

It hosts Functional English worksheets, reading and writing exercises, and revision materials across different levels, including Entry Level and Level 1. Treat it as focused drill practice between timed papers rather than mock-exam material. Check each download's description first, since formats vary and an exercise won't always match your awarding body's style or count as an official past paper.

9. Leeds City College

Leeds City College publishes a set of Level 2 Functional Skills English sample papers. It's a handy extra source once you've worked through your awarding body's official materials and want fresh questions to keep going.

Slot these papers into your study plan as a mid-week mock rather than treating them as your main resource. The page covers Level 2 only, so it won't suit Entry Level or Level 1 learners. Check the format against your own qualification before timing yourself, and expect fewer mark schemes than an awarding-body site provides.

10. GOV.UK and Ofqual

Use GOV.UK and Ofqual to pin down the rules before you pick another paper. Treat them as the regulator's rulebook for England: they tell you what Functional Skills English must cover, while your awarding organisation's site shows how your exam board asks it.

The qualification has three components: Reading, Writing, and Speaking, Listening and Communicating. At Levels 1 and 2, Reading and Writing are externally assessed and SLC is judged separately, so a written paper never shows the whole mark picture. The reformed qualifications were introduced for teaching from September 2019, so favour post-reform samples and ignore legacy papers that drift from current demands. Ofqual's review of reformed Functional Skills gives useful background if you want the reasoning.

Our advice: check the Ofqual conditions once, match every download to your board and level, then slot each paper into a weekly plan with Reading, Writing and SLC practice spaced out. You'll get more from that than from a folder full of random PDFs.

Top 10 English Functional Skills Past Paper Resources Compared

Match the resource to your exam board first. A paper from the wrong awarding body will still help your reading and writing, but it won't mirror the format you'll face on the day. Start with your own board's materials, then use the rest for extra timed practice.

Resource Coverage & Format Learning Support Access & Value Best Suited To
City & Guilds Entry Level to Level 2; sample and past papers Question papers, source documents and many mark schemes 💰 Resource availability varies by level and component 👥 Learners taking City & Guilds assessments ★
NCFE Official sample and practice assessments; paper and digital formats Assessment-format guidance Some materials require centre or tutor access 👥 NCFE learners preparing for paper or online assessment ★
Pearson Edexcel Entry Level to Level 2; sample assessments and teaching resources ✨ ExamWizard creates tailored practice papers Live test papers are restricted to approved centres 👥 Pearson candidates seeking targeted revision ★
Open Awards Official Level 2 Reading, Writing, and Speaking/Listening samples Reading and Writing mark schemes Check qualification pages for level-specific materials 👥 Open Awards learners targeting specific components ★
Ascentis Ascentis English preparation and question types ✨ Online Preparation Station familiarises learners with the assessment platform Access may require credentials from a centre or Ascentis 👥 Ascentis candidates preparing for online assessment
Functional Skills English practice by level, including Entry Level to Level 2 Some papers include mark schemes 💰 Advertises free practice; check board alignment and answers 👥 Learners seeking extra level-based practice
Pass Functional Skills Awarding-body and level-organised resources; mock exams ✨ Some resources include model solutions and video explanations Free resources and paid services; check costs and board match 👥 Independent learners wanting guided or timed practice
Skills Workshop Supplementary worksheets and tasks across levels Printable reading, writing and revision activities 💰 Individual resources vary; not a full official past-paper archive 👥 Learners practising specific skills
Leeds City College Online Functional Skills English Level 2 samples Additional revision practice Check paper details and awarding-body fit 👥 Level 2 learners looking for extra practice
GOV.UK / Ofqual England's qualification requirements and assessment expectations Authoritative regulatory guidance, not practice papers 💰 Free to access 👥 Learners and tutors seeking qualification context 🏆

Our advice: pull every paper your own awarding body publishes first, then add one free practice site for variety. The third-party resources are brilliant for volume, but only your board's papers show the exact layout and mark scheme you'll be scored against.

Turn your practice into a pass

Choose papers for your awarding body and level, then sit them under timed conditions. Mark your work against the relevant mark scheme. Don't just download another paper when you lose marks: identify the skill behind the mistake, practise it, then try again. Papers can help with Reading and Writing, but prepare separately for Speaking, Listening and Communicating.
