With the news that the more and more University Graduates are taking any job going at the moment it shows that there is a real fight for every job. In 2011 it was estimated that for every Graduate Job had up to 80 applicants. Considering that there were approximately 15,000 Graduate Jobs available last year it shows the bottleneck that is present in the jobs market.
With University Graduates applying for ‘lower-skilled’ jobs on the job market than what their degree was in this creates a worry that people without degrees will struggle to get past the CV stage for fewer jobs that are around at the moment.
Ideas, plans and schemes have been put in place, revised, re-launched every so often to aid more people to get jobs but, the fact that there are so many different schemes launched, shows that there is no perfect solution yet. Whether you are currently in further education or in in a job, one of the best ways to further your career prospects is learning new skills.
Studying in your own time to improve your own career or adding more skills to your bow will always be beneficial to yourself as it allows you to look further afield in the job market or help you get more responsibilities and more pay when it comes round to appraisal time in the office.
Also, we have a number of our students that are planning to go to University or are already in University and use our courses to advance their study in their chosen area of interest. We also have a number of students who are taking a break from University education to earn some money, travel etc. but don’t want to lose the focus in studying, writing essays and as such keep their minds sharp and learn new skills and techniques.

To be honest the problem with people getting jobs will only increase.most of the current goverment schemes simply do not work
I think doing distance learning courses is really beneficial, as it shows that you are self motivated/driven and do something constructive in your spare time rather than watch television. Of all the jobs I applied, they all mentioned that it was interesting I was learning from home and showed that I had motivation and a thirst for knowledge 🙂 I think it’s a really good idea to take a variety of courses so demonstrate your ability to be flexible and not rigid. I am now in a successful job working for my local council, currently as an apprentice, but next month I will be going part time on a higher paid job within the council which I’m looking forward to 🙂
Times are toughwith the job market precarious which makes learning a very viable option for all prospective jobseekers
Its a Shocking Statistic indeed.Very interesting article
Very interesting article. And shows the startling figures and competition for jobs. Which makes learning new things all the more important
it has to be said unemployment is getting higher whichever secter people work in. lets just hope it grinds to a halt.and it certainly stresses the importance of learning
well my aim is too keep taking courses to enhance my cv to make it better than any other candidate! It’s hard for university students to find jobs these days! everyone wants experience
Stonebridge courses helped me get the edge over other applicants…thank you stonebridge!!
I’m hoping taking additional courses with Stonebridge will help me to get ahead of other applicants if I apply for Teacher Training – either way they’ll look great on my CV!
Im hoping that doing the courses will help this, but there just isnt the jobs out there.
honestly there are too many people on benefits out there instead of working, i want to do another animal related course too boost my qualifications up and looks good on my CV.
Im lucky enough to have a job, but the comment about so many people on benefits is abit harsh, there are many that want to work and are not able to as there is such a lack of work. Also some people eg. New mothers, are better off on benefits than working due to the cost of childcare a mother that was to go to work on minimum wage would end up paying to work as the cost of childcare would be more then what she earns. I know there are some that cant be bothered to work but then the government should sort this out as they should cut benefits for those that are not trying to work, which have no other circumstances.
Interesting article.
I feel so sorry for school leavers these days. It is almost expected to go to Uni and then it’s almost impossible to get a job. Don’t give up though they are out there.
Benefits and allowances in some countries are so attractive” to some that they immigrate
