Nursing Pathway - Access to Higher Education Diploma (Health)

If it wasn’t for nurses, our healthcare system simply wouldn’t work. Nurses are the people responsible for getting to know the patients, reassuring families, performing minor procedures and even making difficult judgement calls. If you want to study a degree in nursing and begin your journey towards a life-changing career, the Access to HE Diploma (Health) – Nursing Pathway could be perfect for you.

This qualification has been specifically designed for people who want to study nursing but do not currently meet the university entrance requirements. Many universities across the UK are more than happy to accept applications from students who have, or are studying towards, an Access to HE Diploma. However, before you enrol, it is certainly worth double checking with your chosen institution first.

At Stonebridge we understand that many of our students are eager to get to university, so instead of asking them to wait until September to enrol, we allow our learners to start studying whenever they like. Our future nurses can then work on their own watch, fitting their studies around their prior commitments. At Stonebridge, you have up to two years to complete your qualification. This means that people with busy work and family lives do not have to worry about hectic class timetables putting pressure on their learning.

How does my Access to HE Diploma work?

Studying with Stonebridge couldn’t be more straightforward with our comprehensive, easy to understand course materials. All of our learning resources can be retrieved online; all you need is a computer or laptop with internet access. If you do happen to run into any challenges, fear not, as every Stonebridge student has access to our tutors. Our tutors can be contacted by phone, email or our online platform, PEARL. The tutors are there to help with anything to do with your course.

Given that your study schedule will be flexible, you will need to make sure you set the time you need aside. Working to a regular schedule and setting realistic targets will help your dreams become a reality. The early units in your course are included to help you to develop your planning and time management skills. If you do need extra support, you can reach out to other students on the course using PEARL.

How will my Access to HE Diploma be assessed?

Your Access to HE Diploma (Health) – Nursing Pathway will be made up of a number of units. Assessment will take place at the end of the modules. For each unit you should complete the assessment and return it to one of the tutors. Once the tutor has received your work, they will quickly mark it, attach useful feedback and then send it back to you. Every time you receive feedback you should take note of it and try to weave the improvements into your next piece of work. In total, you will need to earn 60 credits to achieve an Access to Higher Education Diploma in health. Of these credits, 45 are drawn from graded units which cover academic subject matter. The remaining 15 credits are ungraded; however they are included to help you improve your study skills.

What happens after my Access to HE Diploma?

Once you have completed your Access to Higher Education course and received your diploma, you’ll be eligible to apply for a nursing course at university. If you study full time at university, it will take you three years to complete your undergraduate degree. Normally, a nursing degree will combine classroom sessions and clinical placements. This structure should fully prepare you for employment in the healthcare sector. Once you are qualified you can use your degree to apply for a number of opportunities such as:

  • Working for the NHS
  • Becoming a school nurse
  • Working in Private Practice
  • Working overseas
  • Going into midwifery
