Sociology A Level Course

This distance learning A Level Sociology course has been designed to the latest specifications. The first available exam dates for this version of the AQA Sociology A Level are in June 2017.

Sociology is a great A Level subject because the knowledge and skills you can learn are often transferable to other areas of study. This course covers some really interesting topics, like crime, cultural identity and the media. But, more importantly, you will learn about the methods used to study these things, like qualitative and quantitative research, data collection and analysis, as well as more general aspects of academic practice. All of these skills are highly sought after in the jobs market, and will also serve you in good stead if you choose to proceed to higher education.

This course has been designed to reflect the 'Integral Elements' and 'Core Themes' of the latest Sociology A Level specifications, as defined by AQA. These are as follows:

Integral Elements

All the following must be an integral part of the study of each topic area:

  • Sociological theories, perspectives and methods
  • The design of the research used to obtain data under consideration, including its strengths and limitations

Attention must be given to drawing out the links between topic areas studied

Core Themes

Students must study the following two core themes:

  • Socialisation, culture and identity
  • Social differentiation, power and stratification

The themes should be understood and applied to particular substantive areas of Sociology. These themes are to be interpreted broadly as threads running through many areas of social life and should not therefore be regarded as discrete topics.

In addition, students must understand the significance of conflict and consensus, social structure and social action, and the role of 'values'.

This UKDLP distance learning course is designed to reflect the subject content you will encounter in the AQA A Level exams. AQA has split this content into 'compulsory content', which you will definitely encounter, and 'optional content'. The optional content means you will have a choice about which items from this group of topics you will answer a question on in the exam. See below for details:

Compulsory Content

4.1 Education with Theory and Methods

  • 4.1.1 Education
  • 4.1.2 Methods in context

  • 4.3.2 Theory and Methods
