Can A Vegan Diet Meet An Athlete’s Needs

Written by Andy Martin

For any athlete, diet plays a major role in their health

With great athletic prowess comes a host of perceptions about what these people are like and what fuels their abilities. Most people would often think piles and piles of meat – they need to fuel all that muscle, after all. Well, as surprising as it may sound, many incredibly successful athletes are actually following a plant based diet and dominating in their field.
Whether you are a boxer, swimmer, cyclist, dancer, snowboarder, basketball player, bodybuilder and whatever other sports, it is possible to thrive on a vegan diet.

Venus Williams
Venus first turned vegan in 2011 to battle chronic fatigue and full-body inflammation caused by the auto-immune disease Sjogren’s Syndrome.
“Changing my diet has made a big difference” she said, “I’m not perfect, so I forgive myself if I make mistakes. I do a lot of juicing as well, a lot of wheat grass shots, a lot of fresh juices.”

World famous track star Carl Lewis wasn’t always a vegetarian. But he eventually adopted a vegan diet to prepare for the World Championships in 1991.
Carl Lewis earned a total of 10 Olympic medals over his career, nine of them gold.

Vegan high protein foods

– Pumpkin seeds: pumpkin seeds are a great grab-and-go snack or topping for salads and soups.
– Dried beans: dried black beans, kidney beans, lentils, chickpeas, and pinto beans are all delicious choices for low-fat, fiber-filled protein.
– Soy milk, but also tofu and soybeans, are excellent sources of protein.
– Almonds… Go nuts over almonds 🙂
– Quinoa. Most grains contain a small amount of protein, particularly quinoa seeds. It also contains all nine essential amino acids that the body needs for growth and repair.
– Sesame, sunflower and poppy seeds
