What Is A Life Skills Coach?

Written by Fiona
life coach career

Life skills coaching is a growing profession since more people have discovered the key to their success lies within themselves. With the right tools to unlock their potential, people can achieve great things.

This makes becoming a life skills coach a highly rewarding career for anyone who thrives on helping other people succeed. With your help, businesses, groups and individuals can learn how to get what they want from their lives.

This might all sound like something you want to pursue, but as a relatively new field of work, you may be asking yourself ‘what does a life skills coach do?’. We explain this and what you can expect from the role below, plus, the most efficient way into this gratifying career.

Life Skills Coach Job Duties

There are many ways you can work as a life skills coach depending on your interests, skills and specialist knowledge. However, the life skills coach description, role wise, is essentially the same.

As a life skills coach, you will:

  • Initiate the working relationship by putting together a contract that details the number of sessions, confidentiality and the Code of Ethics you will work to
  • Form a trusting working relationship with the client, giving them a safe space where they can discuss their challenges
  • Support clients throughout their change by motivating and encouraging them
  • Implement your learned skills and techniques to evoke your client’s self-awareness
  • Suggest self-help techniques like mindfulness and describe their benefits for stress management and increased productivity
  • Help clients see how their actions and beliefs may be impacting their feelings
  • Work with clients to identify the goals they want to achieve and map out an agreed strategy to reach them
  • Review their progress in each session

What Skills Do I Need to Become A Life Coach?

It takes a certain type of person to be a life skills coach. You need to help people identify for themselves what is causing the issues in their lives and how their own behaviours might be causing or preventing them.

To become a life skills coach, you must:

  • Be driven by helping people
  • Be a keen problem solver
  • Have a creative approach in how people can overcome their challenges
  • Be kind, non-judgemental and trustworthy
  • Relate to and connect with people from all backgrounds

You should also:

  • Be able to speak clearly, take detailed notes and listen actively
  • Have a handle on stressful situations
  • Be empathetic towards others
  • Have good judgement
  • Be decisive

So, if you love to see people succeed and feel like you can connect with people on a deeper level, you would no doubt thrive in a life skills coach role.

Life Skills Coach Certification

If you’re wondering how to become a life skills coach, there are a number of ways you can get into the role.

Life coaching isn’t a regulated profession, so there is no one course to get you qualified. Many life skills coaches go into this role later in life once they have gained life and professional experience of their own. If their knowledge and skills are useful, people will be wanting to hear from them.

This can be especially true for successful business people, who often move into business life skills coaching to impart their wisdom.

However, there is more to life skills coaching than just being a success yourself. You need to be able to understand the principles behind behaviour modification, as well as the process of change.

So, in as much as you don’t need qualifications to get life skills coaching jobs, they are the most direct way into the role. This is because they evidence that you have gained the essential knowledge required to successfully guide others.
