Why We Love Pets

Written by Andy Martin

Pets come in all shapes and sizes from the traditional dog and cats, hamsters etc. to horses and turtles and to the more unique; snakes, spiders and lizards. Having a family pet is great for people of all ages but also a brilliant business market!
In 2010 the Pet Industry was worth £4.3billion pounds to the UK Economy (Source Keynote). With estimates that owning a dog can cost its owners between £7,650 and £8,750 in its lifetime.

That outlay covers everything from insurance, food, bedding, vet bills and naturally the odd treat. It all adds up! 43% of the UK population owns a pet of some description with cats and dogs being the majority.

Despite the economic downturn, pampering of animals is bucking the trend and is steadily increasing. Pet Parlours are appearing up and down high streets and also mobile parlours which provide a range of services from coat care to nail clipping and massages.

Many pets are put in doggy day care while their owners are in work, and also into pet holiday homes which their owners go on holidays. On top of this, these pets can often be seen as substitutes for children by many single people and can be treated to regular gifts such as toys, edible treats and new collars, leashes etc. Also, within a family unit, the family dog can also be given regular gifts from doting children as Christmas and Birthdays (7 a year remember!!!) become fortuitous occasions for many canines! One of the best industry sectors to be involved is Animal Care and looking after pets.

This is why here at Stonebridge we have a number of courses which are designed so you can look after pets in various ways and also provide you with the opportunity to create a successful business in this expanding market.
