Access to Higher Education Courses

What are Access to Higher Education Diplomas?

These popular Access to Higher Education Diplomas are ideal if you want to start a university course but have no formal qualifications. By successfully completing a relevant Access to Higher Education Diploma you will find that many universities will welcome you aboard to further your higher education by means of a degree course.

An Access to Higher Education Diploma makes it possible for you to lay an extensive but solid foundation of knowledge across a broad subject range as a gateway to enrol on one of a wide range of degree programmes.

Through our delivery partner Dimensions Training Solutions we offer several Access to Higher Education Diplomas in Health, Social Work, Science, Social Science, Social Science & Humanities as well as Medicine & Healthcare Professions. Each of these Diplomas will have a choice of pathways so you can specialise and meet your chosen university’s entry criteria. For example, by gaining an Access to Higher Education Diploma (Health), you could go on to study for a degree in Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy.

Note this: All universities and colleges have specific entry requirements for each of their courses. The Access to Higher Education Diploma will give you the opportunity to apply to a wide range of University courses. It’s vital that you check what these are as this could affect whether you will be accepted on to the course or not. The Access to Higher Education Diploma testifies to your chosen University that you are more than capable of studying at the Higher Education level; simply put it’s your gateway to Higher Education!

Access to Higher Education Diplomas are only available to learners in the UK.

If you're a UK resident aged 19 or over then you'll have to pay your own fees but you can apply for the government backed 19+ Advanced Learner Loan. This will be paid back in monthly installments but the payments only begin once you've finished the Access to HE course and are earning over £21,000 pa.

Ideally, once you've finished the Access to HE Diploma you'll then go on to complete a Higher Education (HE) qualification, such as a degree course. The outstanding balance of your 19+ Advanced Learner Loan will then be written off.

The degree course does not have to relate to the Access to HE course that you've previously taken, however, both must be successfully (Access and Degree) completed in order to cancel re-payment of the 19+ Advanced Learner Loan.

In 2014/2015 £45 million was loaned to students studying Access courses using the 19+ Advanced Learner Loan Scheme alone (source: www.gov.uk; Department for Business, Innovation & Skills, publication title “19+ advanced learner loans application information: August 2015”). This gives you some idea of the immense popularity of these gateway courses that open up great opportunities for people with limited qualifications.

Many school pupils think that a university education isn’t for them only to discover a little later on that their career pathway is restricted. Access courses provide them with a way to gain the knowledge and qualifications they need to thrive in their desired profession.

Others lack the confidence to get involved in higher education but later welcome the chance to use an Access to HE course as a stepping stone to a fully-fledged university education.

So as you can see, Access to Higher Education qualifications are achieved by an extremely mixed group of people most of whom go on to successful careers in their chosen profession.
