If you're a UK resident aged 19 or over then you'll have to pay your own fees but you can apply for the government backed 19+ Advanced Learner Loan. This will be paid back in monthly installments but the payments only begin once you've finished the Access to HE course and are earning over £21,000 pa.
Ideally, once you've finished the Access to HE Diploma you'll then go on to complete a Higher Education (HE) qualification, such as a degree course. The outstanding balance of your 19+ Advanced Learner Loan will then be written off.
The degree course does not have to relate to the Access to HE course that you've previously taken, however, both must be successfully (Access and Degree) completed in order to cancel re-payment of the 19+ Advanced Learner Loan.
In 2014/2015 £45 million was loaned to students studying Access to Higher Education Diplomas using the 19+ Advanced Learner Loan Scheme alone (source: www.gov.uk; Department for Business, Innovation & Skills, publication title “19+ advanced learner loans application information: August 2015”). This gives you some idea of the immense popularity of these gateway courses that open up great opportunities for people with limited qualifications.
