Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) (RQF) Level 3

If you are interested in a career of helping others to achieve their full potential, by offering assessment and feedback, the Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement is the right course for you.

This Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) is the new RQF qualification (500/9758/1) which replaces the old A1\2 and D32\33 assessor qualification.

Also known as a TAQA qualification (that stands for Training, Assessment and Quality Assurance), it is part of a category of quality assurance qualifications.

Beyond understanding what an assessment is and how to plan for one, this course will also help you learn how to practically carry out an evaluation, how to manage information, offer feedback in the follow-up, while observing legal and regulatory requirements.

Who should study this course?

This level 3 assessing vocational achievement course is suitable for anyone looking to assess vocational competencies for a wide range of qualifications, such as: apprenticeships, functional skills, technical certificates, NVQs, awards, or diplomas.

You do not need to have prior qualifications or experience to enrol on this course.

Am I required to do a placement?

To successfully achieve qualified status as an assessor, you will need to have a work placement in a suitable environment. You tutor will be able to provide guidance regarding the type of placement required.

While the first part of this course will be assessed through a series of assignments, the second and third units will require a placement that allows you access to evaluating nationally regulated qualifications such as NVQ units, or RQF qualifications. This assessment will be done through one visit per unit (the last 2 units you complete) and information will be provided by the learning team.

What happens after the course?

Once you successfully complete this course, you will know how to use assessment methods and how to apply them in vocational and training environments, to help students gain insight on their progress.

By the end of your qualification, you will be able to find work assessing learners in college as well as work-based settings. You could also work for yourself and take up independent consulting projects with private or public companies. Some of the jobs you can find are:

  • NVQ Assessor
  • Specialist Leadership and Management Trainer
  • Online Assessor

VTCT, Vocational Training Charitable Trust, is a Government-approved awarding organisation which has awarded world class qualifications since 1962 and has been at the forefront of developing the vocational system of qualifications in the United Kingdom ever since. Our full qualification package includes Hairdressing & Barbering, Beauty Therapy, Complementary Therapy, Sport & Active Leisure, Hospitality & Catering, Business & Retail and Learning & Development.

Learners will need to produce full and articulate answers to questions. As this is a Level 3 qualification, learners will need to have a good standard of written and verbal communication skills (written skills, for example, would need to be at Level 2+ but ideally Level 3). As this is an 'education' qualification, learners are required to demonstrate correct use of spelling, grammar and composition. Formal 'referencing' is also required within the written work. Learners need to be working with people who are working towards an NVQ style qualification in order to fulfill the criteria. There are multiple criteria to complete that will mean working with a range of learners.

Average completion timeframe

Placement or Practical required

Learners need to be working or have a placement in a suitable environment. The setting needs to be providing/delivering QCF or NVQ qualifications. Learners must be able to assess learners (between 2 - 4 as a minimum depending on those learners needs/abilities). They must have access to an IV (Internal Verifier) in their workplace who can act as a witness to confirm the learner has undertaken work as they describe in their evidence and who can allow them access to Standardisation meetings within the organisation.

If placement or practical required, when?
