Certificate in Education and Training (RQF) Level 4

Have you ever wanted to teach? The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training RQF (601/4416/6) qualification is the teaching qualification you now need to achieve (post September 2013) if you wish to teach within the further education/lifelong learning sector. This new Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training RQF qualification replaces the Level 4 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS)

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training RQF aims to develop practical teaching skills and prepares teachers to work in a wide range of contexts. The qualification will give you the necessary understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher in relation to aspects such as:

  • Legislation
  • Equality
  • Diversity
  • Inclusivity
  • Meeting the needs of learners.

The qualification includes the use of initial and diagnostic assessments and requires you to plan and deliver inclusive teaching and learning, carry out assessments of and for learning and use resources effectively.

The qualification can meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers, including:

  • Individuals who are not currently teaching and training but who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements, of the qualification
  • Individuals who are currently teaching and training who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements of the qualification
  • Individuals currently working as assessors who wish to achieve a teaching qualification

You must have a minimum of 30 hours of teaching practice/experience as part of this qualification to meet the requirements above.

What can I do on completion of the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training RQF course?

Once you have your qualification you will be able to work in a number of roles as:

  • Colleges of further education
  •  Community/adult education
  • Hospitals and healthcare
  • Commercial and industrial training
  • Technical and support staff
  • Personnel in the public sector, uniformed services or HM Forces

Am I required to do a placement?

As part of your course you will be required to secure a placement in a suitable environment (more advice on this can be provided by contacting the college if you are in doubt).  You must have a minimum of 30 hours of teaching practice/experience as part of this qualification to meet the requirements above. You will need to provide audio visual evidence totalling 3 hours to submit to your assessor to demonstrate your competency. These should be separate occasions to show your progression and development.

What can I do on completion of this course?

On successful completion of this course you will be able to progress onto the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (or Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) RQF Level 3)  and then apply for QTLS through the Institute for Learning. You may be able to start work in a work or College environment.

Qualification: Certificate in Education and Training RQF Level 4

On completion of this course you will receive the Innovate Awarding Certificate in Education and Training RQF Level 4 qualification. This qualification is listed on the RQF (Qualification Number: 601/4416/6). (See: https://www.innovateawarding.org/ for more information). This course has also been assigned 36 credits.

Innovate Awarding is an Ofqual regulated awarding organisation with an innovative and dynamic approach. They develop off-the-shelf, customised and fully bespoke qualifications across a growing number of sectors all on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). 

Learners will need to produce full and articulate answers to questions. This is a Level 4 qualification therefore learners will need to have good written and verbal communication skills (written skills, for example, would need to be at level 2+ but ideally Level 3). Learners are required to demonstrate correct use of spelling, grammar and composition. Formal 'referencing' is also required within the written work.

Average completion timeframe

The average completion time for this course is 12 months.

Assessement requirements

Assessments will be carried out using various evaluation mediums such as, observation of practice, witness statements, reflections, case studies, placement log and written questions.

Placement or Practical required

Learners need a placement or to be working in a teaching environment which allows for at least 30 hours of teaching practise with nationally recognised qualifications. They need to be in a position to assess learners and work with them so that their evidence can show how they go through the planning, delivering, and assessing aspects.

If placement or practical required, when?

Learners need to be working in a training and education role/environment or have a placement in place before commencing the course. This is to ensure they are able plan and organise the activities that will be undertaken from unit 3.

Observation by us required

Audio Visual (video based) evidence is required in some units and the course cannot be passed without this evidence.

Certification Timeframe

You can expect to receive your certification within 12 weeks of successfully completing the qualification. Please note this can be longer if a EQA sample is required

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand ways to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment
  • Understand the relationships between teachers and other professionals in education and training

Unit Two:  Planning to meet the needs of learners in education and training (A/505/1189)  

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Be able to use initial and diagnostic assessment to agree individual learning goals with learners
  • Be able to plan inclusive teaching and learning in accordance with internal and external requirements
  • Be able to implement the minimum core in planning inclusive teaching and learning
  • Be able to evaluate own practice when planning inclusive teaching and learning

Unit Three:  Delivering education and training (M/505/0122)

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Be able to use inclusive teaching and learning approaches in accordance with internal and external requirements
  • Be able to communicate with learners and other learning professionals to promote learning and progression
  • Be able to use technologies in delivering inclusive teaching and learning
  • Be able to implement the minimum core when delivering inclusive teaching and learning
  • Be able to evaluate own practice in delivering inclusive teaching and learning

  • Be able to prepare assessments of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding.
  • Be able to carry out assessments of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding.
  • Be able to provide required information following the assessment of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding.
  • Be able to maintain legal and good practice requirements when assessing vocational skills, knowledge and understanding.

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the context and principles of internal quality assurance
  • Understand how to plan the internal quality assurance of assessment
  • Understand techniques and criteria for monitoring the quality of assessment internally
  • Understand how to internally maintain and improve the quality of assessment
  • Understand how to manage information relevant to the internal quality assurance of assessment
