About your Diploma

This Forest School qualification has been designed to equip learners with the necessary skills and knowledge needed to run a Forest School Programme.

On completion of the qualification, learners will be fully qualified to become a Forest School Leader. Learners will be able to:

  • Set up and run a Forest School programme
  • Facilitate groups in a learner-centred way
  • Manage a Forest School site sustainably

A career combining helping children to learn safely through risk taking and care and appreciation for the natural environment can be extremely rewarding.

This Ofqual regulated and nationally recognised Level 3 Certificate in Forest School Programme Leadership will provide you with the knowledge and understanding to work as a Forest School Leader.

Unit 1: Forest School Programmes and the Woodland Environment

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Know about the structures of woodlands
  • Be able to identify a range of flora and fauna
  • Understand the importance of identification for the Forest School Programme Leader
  • Understand the importance of sustainable woodland techniques
  • Know how to involve students in woodland management

 

Unit 2: Delivery of a Forest School Programme

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Know how to deliver, assess, and evaluate a Forest School Programme
  • Have experienced leading a Forest school session
  • Had the opportunity to observe and assess the impact of a group of student’s behaviours
  • Understand flexible teaching methods to adapt to students’ individuals learning needs

 

Unit 3: Learning and Development at a Forest School Programme

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Discover the relevant theories of learning and development
  • Understand the importance of a Forrest School Programme
  • Explore how leaders of a Forest School Programme can support student’s holistic development
  • Understand how the educator can reflect on the student’s behaviour and training experience

 

Unit 4: Planning a Forest School Programme

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the principles of planning and development of a Forest School
  • Be aware the history, ethos, ecological impact and relevancy of policies and procedures
  • Have had the opportunity to plan six Forest School programme sessions with a communication strategy and evidence of adaptation to individuals and groups developmental needs

 

Unit 5: Practical Skills for a Forest School Programme

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Be able to facilitate a range of woodland skills appropriate to a Forest School programme
  • Understand how to use personal protective equipment (PPE) tools and equipment, knots, woodland materials
  • Know how to build temporary outdoor woodland shelters
  • Know how to facilitate, manage, and cook on a campfire suitable for a Forest School programme

Each unit will be assessed by a range of in-depth theory assessments. Students will need to show sufficient evidence that they have the required knowledge, skills and understanding of the assessment criteria. 

 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded the Level 3 Certificate in Forest School Programme Leadership. Students will gain a Level 3 Qualification, Ofqual Number: 601/1727/8.
