There are no entry requirements for this qualification however, it is expected for learners to have working knowledge of at least Level 2. As the qualification is based within the veterinary environment, some previous experience in this field would be beneficial. All applications must be the minimum age of 16 and have a basic understanding of literacy and numeracy skills.

You have 12 months to complete your course. 

Certification Timeframe 

Learners can expect their certification within 6 months of completing the course, following the (EQA) External Quality Assurance of assessment.

Unit 1: Concepts of Customer Service 

On completion of this unit you will: 

  • Understand the purpose and importance of customer service within the role of a veterinary receptionist 
  • Be able to engage positively with customers in challenging situations 
  • Understand the process of making appointments 
  • Understand the importance of accepting a payment for services and items 
  • Understand the different types of veterinary insurances and how to deal with claims made 
  • Understand the different types of animal health plans and their purpose 
  • Be able to control customer dissatisfaction 
  • Understand the terms euthanasia and bereavement 

Unit 2: Veterinary Receptionist Administrative Responsibilities 

On completion of this unit you will: 

  • Understand how to appropriately store and control the details of customers 
  • Understand alternative mailing and communication services 
  • Understand the use of and how to handle different relevant paperwork 

Unit 3: Veterinary Products 

On completion of this unit you will: 

  • Understand animal nutrition and food 
  • Understand how to manage the control of parasites 
  • Understand the different products that are encouraged to help aid the health of animals 
  • Be able to accurately inform customers on veterinary products 
  • Understand what is required when in charge of stock 

Unit 4: Veterinary Terms and Clinical Methods 

On completion of this unit you will: 

  • Understand Veterinary phrases and terms that are frequently used in a Veterinary practice 
  • Understand frequent clinical methods used for companion animals 

Unit 5: Veterinary Receptionist Lead   

On completion of this unit you will: 

  • Be able to understand organising and arranging the waiting area and reception 
  • Be able to establish clear roles and responsibilities of the veterinary team within the practice 
  • Be able to understand the importance of health and safety within a veterinary establishment 
  • Be able to understand the importance of approaching an animal in the reception area, taking consideration into diverse behaviours of animals when in the veterinary environment 

To gain the Level 3 Certificate for Veterinary Receptionists you must achieve 36 credits.  

Each unit will be assessed by a range of in-depth theory assessments. You will need to show sufficient evidence that you have the required knowledge, skills and understanding of the assessment criteria. No practical assessment is required.
