About your Diploma

This Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming has been designed to give you the necessary knowledge and skills to become a qualified dog groomer or to open your own dog grooming business. The qualification covers the benefits of grooming including improving the health and wellbeing of the dogs in your care.

During the qualification, you will study grooming techniques for several different breeds of dog. The qualification also covers first aid and customer care.

Along with flexible, online learning, this qualification includes 25 days of practical training at one of the top-of-the-range dog grooming salons and training academies in either Moreton (Wirral) or Bedford (Bedfordshire).

During your practical training, you will work alongside trained and highly experienced dog grooming professionals. This valuable, hands-on experience will allow you to enhance your skill set and develop your grooming and styling techniques by practicing on clients (dogs) in a safe dog grooming salon.

This Diploma qualification is suitable if you are interested in learning professional dog grooming techniques and gaining an Ofqual regulated qualification. It will also be of interest if you already work in an animal care related position or grooming salon and would like to improve your skillset and gain a nationally recognised qualification.

Assessement requirements

Each unit will be assessed by a range of in-depth theory assessments. Students will need to show sufficient evidence that they have the required knowledge, skills and understanding of the assessment criteria. 

Placement or Practical required

This course includes 25 days of practical training in either Bedford or Moreton, Wirral.

Once you have met the relevant thresholds, including completing 2 units of learning & paying for your course in full, you will be able to access your placement.

All course fees, inclusive of all payment plans including our Premium Credit Limited option, must be settled before certification can be ordered.

Unit 1: Styling and Finishing Dogs

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Be able to work safely whilst styling and finishing dogs
  • Be able to provide accurate recordings whilst dog grooming
  • Be able to prepare for the styling and finishing of different dog types
  • Be able to complete styling and finishing techniques for different coats and breeds of dogs

Unit 2: Animal Health and Welfare

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Be able to promote and maintain the health and welfare whilst dog grooming
  • Be able to work in a sage manner with animals
  • Know how to promote and maintain the health and welfare whilst dog grooming

Unit 3: Assess and Plan Dog Grooming Work

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Be able to assess and plan the dog grooming work
  • Be able to prepare, maintain and use equipment
  • Be able to promote health and safety and environmental good practice in dog grooming work

Unit 4: Canine Health and First Aid

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Know the requirements of canine first aid
  • Know the main classifications of emergencies
  • Know how to exam an injured dog
  • Understand the ABC of canine first aid
  • Be able to perform the recovery position and conduct resuscitation to a dog
  • Be able to perform treatment to dog wounds
  • Know about choking, stings and poisonings and how to perform treatment to a dog
  • Know the signs of hyperthermia and how to perform treatment to a dog
  • Know the signs of convulsion and how to perform treatment to a dog
  • Know about different burn types in dogs
  • Know how to communicate in an emergency and the contents of a canine first aid kit

Unit 5: Dog Grooming Health Checks on a Dog

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Be able to complete dog grooming health checks
  • Know the process of monitoring and reporting on a dog’s health status
  • Know how to recognise and promote dog’s wellbeing

Unit 6: Engaging with Dog Grooming Clients

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Be able to welcome and engage dog grooming clients
  • Be able to deal with customer complaints

To gain the Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming you must achieve 38 credits.

Each unit will be assessed by a range of in-depth theory assessments. Students will need to show sufficient evidence that they have the required knowledge, skills and understanding of the assessment criteria.
