This course is also a recognised CELTA equivalent, which will maximise your chances of employment once you’ve qualified.

Assessement requirements

You will be assessed through your online submissions at the end of each unit.

Additional requirements

Learners will need a desktop PC or a laptop to complete the course. iPads and/or mobile phones are not suitable.

Certification Timeframe

Learners can expect to receive their certificate within 12 weeks. This time period can be longer if an EQA sample is required.

Extension Rules

£40 for 6 months extension is OK, can extend multiple times

All course fees, inclusive of all payment plans including our Premium Credit Limited option, must be settled before certification can be ordered.

The units are broken down for you here so that you can see what your qualification will include. However, the assignments you complete have been designed so that you can complete multiple tasks together where possible and you will see a different number of assignments in your personal portfolio; you will still be completing the whole qualification.

Unit 1: Language Awareness and Skills

Upon completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the relationship between linguistic form, function and meaning in standard English in a communicative context.
  • Understand the principal concepts and terminology for describing the structure and use of English.
  • Understand how to teach linguistic form, function and meaning in standard English for the purposes of communication.
  • Understand how linguistic form, function and meaning are integrated into language learning syllabi and programmes of study.
  • Understand how to assess learner competence in phonology, lexis and syntax in standard English.
  • Understand geographical varieties of English, including the emergence of English as a lingua franca.
  • Understand sources of interlingual interference.
  • Understand current written and spoken usage of standard UK English.
  • Be able to use reference resources, including own research into teaching points (language and skills) in teaching English as a Second Language.

Unit 2: Learner Profile

Upon completion of this unit you will:

  • Be able to develop a simple linguistic profile and needs analysis for one learner using information from various sources.
  • Be able to prepare and teach a lesson of no more than 60 minutes for an individual learner to meet identified learning needs.
  • Be able to make recommendations for a learner’s study programme in at least one of the four main skills, including grammar and phonology.

Unit 3: Materials Investigation

Upon completion of this unit you will:

  • Be able to plan simple classroom teaching materials and accompanying tasks.
  • Be able to produce simple classroom teaching materials and accompanying tasks.
  • Be able to deliver an English language class using own devised teaching materials and accompanying tasks.
  • Be able to evaluate own devised teaching materials and accompanying tasks to improve the content and style for future use.
  • Be able to contribute to evaluation discussions about the use of own devised teaching materials and tasks.

Unit 4: Teaching Skills

Upon completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand current ESOL teaching approaches and methodologies for the teaching of English as a Second Language to groups with diverse backgrounds.
  • Understand classroom management techniques for the teaching of English as a Second Language to groups with diverse backgrounds.
  • Be able to create and use materials and teaching aids effectively to meet learner needs and learning objectives.
  • Understand a range of teaching materials, course books and print materials used in ESOL teaching.
  • Understand own development needs in relation to teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Unit 5: Unknown Language

Upon completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand learning experiences and the feelings of learners when learning a new language where there is little, or no use of the learners’ own first language.
  • Be able to evaluate language teaching that does not use learners’ first language for lesson delivery.
  • Be able to carry out contrastive analysis of the main elementary features of English and the taught language.

This TESOL course consists of quizzes, videos and real-world classroom examples. Once you have completed the modules, you will be required to complete a final assessment to receive your qualification.
