Overview
More than 850,000 people live with dementia UK. Currently, the odds of developing dementia jump from 1/14 for over 65s to 1/6 for over 80s.
As the result of an aging population, experts predict the number of people with the condition will increase to more than a million by 2025. That will increase to two million by 2050.
Dementia is also the only condition in the top 10 causes of death without a treatment to prevent or cure its progression.
This course will help you to understand the effects of dementia and how to effectively support someone with the condition through person-centred care.
You will also learn about the importance or early diagnosis and the different types of dementia and their symptoms.
This course will teach you the vital the role of communication, interaction and inclusion plays in the support and care of individuals with the condition. There is also a focus on equality, diversity and inclusion and the importance of treating dementia patients with dignity.
There are no specific entry requirements, however, learners should have a minimum of Level 1 in Literacy and Numeracy or equivalent.
Minimum age restriction
Learners must be age 16+ to enrol.
Average completion timeframe
You have 24 months to complete your course.
Assessement requirements
You will be assessed through written questions that will test the knowledge you have gained throughout the course.
Placement or Practical required
This course consists of online theory only.
Certification Timeframe
Learners typically receive their certification within 12 weeks, though this can be longer if an EQA sample is required.

To be awarded the Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Dementia Care, learners are required to successfully complete 7 mandatory units:
- Unit 01 - Principles of understanding dementia
- Unit 02 - Understand the use of person-centred approaches to underpin the care and support of individuals with dementia
- Unit 03 - Principles of communication and interaction in dementia care and support
- Unit 04 - Principles of supporting positive interaction, occupation and activity in dementia care
- Unit 05 - Principles of understanding equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care and support
- Unit 06 - Understand how individuals with dementia can be supported to exercise rights and choices
- Unit 07 - Principles of the administration of medication to individuals with dementia
Your work will be assessed at the end of each unit. The assignments will then be used to create a portfolio of evidence. You will also gain feedback and grades provided by your personal tutor, that will help you progress through the course.
