About your Diploma

This Level 3 Award in Wildlife Photography has been specifically designed to give you the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to be able to work in wildlife photography.

During the qualification, you will be able to study digital photography including the components of a digital camera along with the basic controls and parameters. You will have the opportunity to explore photographic techniques and how to apply them along with photo editing and postproduction.

The qualification will introduce you to the best techniques for photographing different species and examines the concept of storytelling in wildlife photography.  At the end of the qualification, you will be able to produce a wildlife photography portfolio.

While you will complete your wildlife photography studies online, your training will involve a two-day practical placement at Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park in Suffolk. Here, you will be able to learn a range of innovative skills and techniques, taught by an experienced wildlife photography expert.

This hands-on training, which is conducted in small groups, will enable you to photograph a variety of exotic animals, from reptiles, birds, and butterflies to mammals, rare breeds, and fish. To capture the essence of these wonderful creatures, you will learn vital techniques, including:

  • Composition
  • Camera settings
  • Colour balance
  • How to build confidence in moving away from automatic settings

By the end of this practical training stint, you will have a solid understanding of how to capture images from different perspectives, such as through an object, higher dimensions, low ground level, the use of the rule of thirds, and macro photography. You will be encouraged to tell a story through your photographs, creating images that will connect emotionally with the client.

This training will be carried out through small group instruction, so the tutor can impart their knowledge on a personal level with you and a handful of other wildlife photography students. This enables you to learn in a comfortable environment, benefit from the perspective of others and be able to develop both your individual and creative viewpoint through photographic storytelling.

Starting your Career

On completion of the Level 3 Award in Wildlife Photography, you will have the knowledge and skills required to move into employment or self-employment in wildlife photography and related areas.

You may also choose to progress onto further qualifications in related subjects such as the Level 3 Award in Pet Photography.
