How to become a CBT therapist

Written by Andy Martin
Our CBT training is convenient and online.

In 2017, one in four people in the UK will struggle with a mental health issue.

Anxiety and depression have always affected human beings, but research has revealed that self-harm and suicidal thoughts are on the rise. Mental health in young people often hits the headlines, with issues triggered by exam stress, bullying or problems at home.

The elderly are often overlooked, but statistics show that depression affects around 22% of men and 28% of women over the age of 65. 85% of older people with depression don’t get the help that they need.

What is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)?

CBT is a form of treatment that focuses on finding practical solutions. The talking therapy breaks cycles of negative thinking, by splitting worries into more manageable pieces. It explores the connection between thoughts, emotions, situations and actions in daily life.

CBT empowers people to solve their problems independently and can successfully stop debilitating mental health issues from developing. Treatment sessions are based around the specific needs of an individual and therapists discuss current issues, instead of past experiences.

Developing your skills

Discover how to become a CBT therapist through a CBT distance learning qualification.

The course content was very thorough and I learnt a lot about CBT. It has given me a firm base for becoming a therapist in the future.

A Stonebridge College CBT online course is the ideal introduction if you’re:

  • A counsellor looking to expand your range of services.
  • Completely new to the field and interested in how to become a CBT therapist.
  • Working in a role that would benefit from an understanding of talking therapy.
  • Hoping to offer a friend or family member the resources they need to manage a mental health problem.

CBT distance learning will prepare you to start a new career.

A knowledge of CBT will give you the confidence to support people from different age groups. More children and young people are suffering from anxiety disorders than ever before, with signs often starting to show as early as three years old.

The digital generation

Many professionals think that mental health problems come from increased social pressure and internet use. If caught early, some issues can be treated. CBT is an alternative to giving medication to children, and instead provides strategies for handling stress or coping with academic failure.

CBT and the elderly

Research into using CBT to support older clients suggests that depressive symptoms can be reduced. Treatment approaches are different, because health often plays a major role. CBT therapists must take into account cognitive ability and conditions such as dementia. Group therapy is commonly used, which also offers valuable social interaction for elderly clients.

The future for CBT

Studies have revealed that accessing CBT on a mobile phone can treat mild insomnia. In the future, there may be the potential for therapists to incorporate technology into their treatment plans. Become a CBT therapist through a CBT qualification.

Opening up lines of communication about mental health issues is vital, and progress is being made to integrate CBT solutions into everyday life.

Make a difference

If you’re passionate about helping other people, and looking to join the counselling industry, CBT training will get you started.
