Studying your A Level

A Biology at A Level is the opportunity to build on existing knowledge of the subject. Taking the core theories and principles and drilling down deeper, helping you to understand human biology and the world we inhabit.

During your studies you will cover the basic components of living organisms, biological molecules and genetics.

You will also explore ecosystems and the environment. You will be encouraged to draw links between the various elements such as the natural world and communicable diseases.

Throughout the course, you’ll develop a greater understanding of key biological principles.

The course is designed in line with AQA specifications to prepare you for your exam. You’ll also be able to apply your knowledge within the practical elements of the course.

Practical elements allow you to test your understanding of biological theory. The practical elements include:

  • Appropriate apparatus to record quantitative data
  • Ethical use of organisms to measure plant or animal responds
  • Identify biological molecules
  • Use microbiological aseptic techniques, including the use of agar plates and broth
  • Use sampling techniques in fieldwork

You will have 3 exams to complete to receive your qualification.

Exams will be a mixture of:

  • Short and long answer questions
  • Comprehension and extended response questions
  • Critical analysis of given experimental data
  • One essay from a choice of two titles

Throughout your exam, you’ll be expected to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of biological concepts, theories and research methods.

Upon completion of the course and your exams, you will have a wide-ranging understanding of the subject area which will support progression to degree-level study or career advancement.

Note that you will have to book your practical exams in advance of your written exams,  so take that into account when planning your studies.

Getting Started

Stonebridge Associated Colleges is a leading provider of distance learning courses in the UK. That means we put you at the centre of the learning. This allows you the flexibility to study when it suits you, not us.

There are no classrooms, timetables or evenings spent in draughty old learning annexes. You have the power to complete your studies when you will be at your most effective, in an environment you will be most comfortable in.

You still get the academic support from your tutor. They will provide advice, guidance and feedback on your assignments. This allows you to progress in a structured, positive way.

Ultimately this allows you to study and complete your A Level in Biology in a manner that reflects your lifestyle, commitments and your approach to learning.

You can start learning from the moment you have enrolled with us. We don’t have term times, just an online portal with all your course material ready and waiting.

That means you can complete your A Level in Biology as quickly as you choose. The only specific deadline to work towards is your exam – exam sittings are held once per year in May or June.

There are no entry requirements, but a GCSE or iGCSE in this subject would be beneficial. You must complete at least 50% of the course and pass the associated assignments before you are eligible to be entered for the exams.
