Studying your A Level

A Level Chemistry deepens your understanding of scientific elements taught in GCSE. By furthering your learning with an A Level you’ll be able to develop your understanding and grasp complex principles and theories.

You’ll learn about atomic structure and bonding, the Periodic Table, alkanes, acids and alcohols, amongst others.

You’ll be able to apply your theory-based knowledge into the practical elements included in this course. The practical elements include:

  • Using appropriate apparatus to record data
  • Set up electrochemical cells and measuring voltages
  • Measure rates of reaction by at least two different methods
  • Safely and carefully handle solids and liquids, including corrosive, irritant, flammable and toxic substances

You’ll have 3 exams to complete your qualification. The exam structure will include:

  • Multiple-choice questions
  • Short and long answer questions
  • Practical techniques and data analysis

The exams are designed to put your knowledge to the test. You’ll need to demonstrate a solid understanding of scientific ideas, process, techniques and procedures. As well as analyse and evaluate scientific theory and data.

Note that you will have to book your practical exams in advance of your written exams,  so take that into account when planning your studies.

Getting Started

Online learning allows you to study without having to rearrange your whole schedule. You’re able to learn whenever suits you best at whatever pace works for you.

Stonebridge Associated Colleges is one of the UK’s leading online learning providers. Our courses are designed for learners getting back into education, so the course content is tailored to you, not 16-year olds.

The course material is accessed via an online portal and the practical lessons will be held in a classroom setting. These will need to be booked in advance. The only specific deadline to work towards is your exam – exam sittings are held once per year in May or June.

A Level chemistry will develop your understanding of scientific principles which can lead to an exciting career in chemistry. Once the course is completed you’ll be able to further your knowledge by taking many science-related degrees at university.

There are no entry requirements, but a GCSE or iGCSE in this subject would be beneficial. You must complete at least 50% of the course and pass the associated assignments before you are eligible to be entered for the exams.

Average completion timeframe

The average time it takes to complete the course is 2 years.

*You will have access to the course for 24 months.

As you progress through your course, you will study the following modules:

  • Introduction to Science
  • Physical Chemistry: Atomic Structure and Bonding
  • Physical Chemistry: Energetics, Kinetics and Equilibria
  • Physical Chemistry: Redox, Thermodynamics and the Rate Equation
  • Physical Chemistry: Equilibria, Electrochemical Cells, Acids and Bases
  • Inorganic Chemistry: Periodicity and the Groups
  • Inorganic Chemistry: Period 3, Transition Metals and the Reactions of Ions
  • Organic Chemistry: Alkanes
  • Organic Chemistry: Alkenes, Alcohols and Analysis

At the end of each unit you will find an end of unit assignment. This is completed online and submitted to your tutor. Once assessed your tutor will return your work complete with its final grade and feedback. Once you’ve successfully passed each unit you’ll be ready to take your exam!

All instalment plans must be paid and up to date before an exam can be booked. In addition, exams cannot be booked for dates before the final payment is successfully made.
