If you need to use English on a daily basis or require specific qualifications to progress your career, then this English Level 2 – Standard course is ideal for you.

Our Functional Skills courses have been designed to offer alternative qualifications to GCSEs. Therefore, they are recognised by employers and can be used as proof for further study or to achieve higher education degrees.

Level 2 in this English – Standard online course is equivalent to a C at GCSE level.

This course covers everything you need to know at Level 2, as well as the skills you need in preparation for the Functional Skills English Level 2 exam.

With this course you can study Functional Skills Level 2 English online, entirely from the comfort of your own home. The programme contains 3 sections that address the essential aspects of English. The first two consist of reading and writing, whilst the third covers the skills required for speaking, listening and communication.

There are no entry requirements to study on this English Level 2 online course and, with the help of our virtual study platform, a personalised learning programme will be generated that is completely tailored to you and your study needs.

Functional Skills English includes sections on:

  • Reading – This module looks at different types of layout features and how these can impact the reader; reading for information, including looking at biased pieces of work that will help you to work out how much the opinions of certain authors can be trusted. All of the reading skills that you learn will be tested in quizzes at the end of each section, ensuring that you are ready to sit your final exam, should you choose to do so.
  • Writing – As well as covering the best way to write certain pieces of text, this module will also test and improve your spelling, punctuation and grammar skills, ensuring that you are ready to sit your final exam, should you choose to do so.
  • Speaking, Listening and Communication – An important element of the English programme is the speaking, listening and communication (SLC) module. This module will improve your verbal communication skills and help to prepare you for your own SLC exam by showing you the best ways to prepare and also giving you examples of the correct way to use various SLC skills on a daily basis.

You’ll be assessed throughout your learning by our online quizzes.

When you’re ready for your final assessments, Functional Skills English has two exams - Reading and Writing – which cover all of the topics you’ll learn in realistic scenarios. These are available as online or a paper-based exams. There is also a separate assessment of Speaking, Listening and Communication. You’ll be responsible for booking your own exams and paying any associated fees, but don’t worry – we’ll give you our handy guide which shows you how to do this and a link to help you to find a provider near you.

Qualification

At the end of this course, should you decide to take the exam, you’ll have gained a Functional Skills Level 2 qualification in English. This is equivalent to a grade C or above (4 or above) at GCSE. It will enable you to go on to further education programmes and can also give you access to some universities.
